The 2019 Cortaca Jug game has been the talk of the college football media since it was announced last week that more than 39,000 tickets have been sold. The game will set a new record for attendance for a Division III football game, breaking the mark of 37,355 set by St. John’s University and the University St. Thomas when they played at Minneapolis’ Target Field in 2017.

College Football Talk, an NBC Sports blog, and the Central New York Business Journal were among the outlets writing about the game this past week.

• The university’s new Institute of Applied Geospatial and Drone Technology was mentioned in a Cortland Standard story about Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul visiting Cortland to monitor progress on the $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative awarded in 2017.
• Kelly Springer M ‘04 is the new dietician spokesperson for the New York Apple Association (NYAA) and her role was featured in The Produce News. She will represent NYAA at the Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit to talk about the health benefits of eating New York apples.
• Megan Quinn, assistant women’s ice hockey coach, was featured in The Daily Orange about her experience playing in the now-defunct Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL).
• Robert Spitzer, distinguished service professor and chair of the Political Science Department, spoke at the Rockefeller Institute of Government in Albany about the importance of gun-related suicide prevention and was featured in the Daily Gazette (Schenectady, N.Y.). He was quoted in a story in the Washington Times about a bump stock buyback program in Washington state. Spitzer spoke to WAER-RM about Donald Trump’s phone calls with the president of Ukraine and the case for impeachment.
• Professor David Barclay of the Geology Department was mentioned in an AuburnPub.com story about a climate change panel to be held at St. James’ Episcopal Church at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23. Barclay will hosts the panel, “Climate Change: A Discussion for Central New York” with Charles Driscoll from Syracuse University and Brian Leydet from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.
• Radio station WHXC 101-FM from Homer, N.Y. wrote about local law enforcement agencies wearing pink badges for the duration of October to support National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. SUNY Cortland’s University Police Department will join others, including the City of Cortland and Ithaca City Police as well as the Cortland County Sheriff’s Department.
• The Cortland Standard caught up with actor and director William Fichtner, who screened his new film “Cold Brook” on campus last week. The film was partially shot at Holloway Field and on Graham Ave. The Cortland Voice posted a story and photos from the screening.
• Kelli Ruchalski ‘07 was featured in a story by WKBW-TV in Buffalo. A former field hockey player at SUNY Cortland, Ruchalski has had a new challenge this fall as the coach of a combined field hockey team between players from West Seneca West and West Seneca East high schools.
• The Lynne Parks ’68 SUNY Cortland Alumni House played host to a Harvest of Gold celebration that raised $19,000 for Guthrie Cortland Medical Center.
• Jordan Kobritz, professor in the Sport Management Department, was quoted in a story from WPVI-TV in Philadelphia, Pa. about baseball fans who have been injured by T-shirt cannons and whether those fans assume risk for injury by buying a ticket.
• Sanford Gutman, professor emeritus of history, was quoted in a Cortland Standard story about rising anti-Semitism and anti-Zionist movements in the U.S.
• Thomas Lickona, director of the Center for the 4th and 5th Rs, was featured in the Manila Bulletin in advance of his visit to the Philippines later this month. He will speak at the International Conference on Fostering Kindness and Respect in School and at Home at the University of Asia and the Pacific and the Malayan Colleges Mindanao.
• David Neal, professor in the Performing Arts Department, was featured on Ithaca.com for his roles as Benoit and Alcindoro in the production of “La Bohème” at Ford Hall at Ithaca College.
• Lynn Anderson, distinguished service professor in the Recreation, Parks and Leisure Studies Department, was mentioned in TraleeToday.ie on her part in a day of inclusion training at the Kerry Sports Academy at the Institute of Technology Tralee in Ireland.
