For more than 150 years, SUNY Cortland has set the bar in teacher education. Our online master’s program in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) offers further proof. With the high demand for qualified second language educators in New York state and around the country, a master’s degree in TESOL will prepare you to meet the needs of diverse learners in our nation’s schools, as well as those who want to learn English as an additional language around the world.

Curriculum

This fully online program, with asynchronous delivery, offers a robust curriculum for learning methods of teaching English to speakers of other languages. Participants will be required to complete eight core courses, two elective courses and successfully complete a comprehensive examination.

Areas of Study

Participants will take courses tailored for TESOL teachers to learn a variety of skills such as;

  • Integrating technology in the classroom
  • Using linguistics to compare English to other language systems
  • Research the theories of language acquisition
  • Administer tests and assessments for second language learners
  • Integrate theories of bilingual and multicultural education
  • Teach English grammar to new users
  • Plan and deliver effective ESL instruction

Graduating with a non-certification M.S.Ed. TESOL, you will be well-positioned for a high-demand career. Open positions for teaching English to speakers of other languages consistently rank among top vacancies nationwide. Our graduates have gone on to successful careers as teachers in private schools, international instructors, adult educators, curriculum developers and educational consultants.

Many of our graduates also pursue additional certification in TESOL, allowing them to teach in public K-12 schools.
