Recommended TVs

For your television to work with our campus cable TV, it is required that your TV has a QAM TV tuner. We have confirmed the following brands come equipped with a QAM tuner:

  • Hitachi
  • Insignia
  • LG (except models made prior to 2007)
  • Polaroid
  • Samsung (except models made prior to 2009)
  • Sharp (except certain 32" Aquos models)
  • Sony (except models made prior to 2007)
  • TCL
  • Toshiba
  • Vizio

The following are not equipped with a QAM tuner and would require a separate QAM tuner purchase:

  • Dynex DX-32L151A11
  • Element
  • Emerson
  • HiSense
  • Magnavox
  • Proscan
  • RCA
  • Sceptre
  • Seiki

This is not a comprehensive list. Please research your TV model to confirm that it is equipped with a QAM tuner.

Cable TV Troubleshooting

The cable TV upgrade may have caused some problems in viewing TV in your room. Check out the FAQ guide provided by Spectrum to solve your issue.

Q: My TV only shows a hand full of channels.

A: There are a couple basic steps to try first:

  • Make sure your TV is set to "cable and not "antenna".
  • Through the TV menu functions perform an auto-scan for channels (May take 10-40 minutes depending on TV model).
  • Once the scan is complete, if the problem persists your TV may not have a digital tuner built in. Please refer to question #2 or replace TV with new digital model.

Q: I don't want to upgrade my television yet, is there a type of tuner box I can purchase to work with the new digital line up?

A: Yes, the Spectrum cable service is a clear QAM signal. Any stand-alone tuner box provided must have a QAM tuner built into it. Tuners with only off-air/terrestrial (8vsb/ATSC modulation) will not work. (These tuners cannot be purchased through Best Buy or Wal-Mart, but you can find them online.)

Q: Where can I pick up a standalone QAM tuner to utilize with my old analog TV?

A: Most local electronic stores only carry Off Air/Terrestrial 8vsb type tuners which will not work with a cable TV QAM signal. Based on testing on other campuses, an Iview-2000STB QAM tuner has been found to work sufficiently. This manufacturer/model is only a suggestion as Spectrum cannot speak to the manufacturer’s quality control. There are other manufacturers/models of varying prices and quality that you may choose to try as well.

Q: My TV shows the channel line-up in a different numbering sequence. Am I getting the proper feed or is the Spectrum digital channel line-up incorrect?

A: If given a choice of STD, HRC, or IRC for auto-scanning options please select STD. Some digital television sets have tuners within them that change the channel numbering sequence even if scanned with STD. All channels should still be able to be received but may show on different channel numbers than what is shown on the Spectrum digital channel line-up chart posted online. This channel line-up variance is a product of the specific TV's tuner and is not an item that Spectrum can control. We have encountered this issue with Samsung but other manufacturers may do the same. If you are missing multiple channels within the line-up please let us know and we will work with you to resolve the matter.

Q: Will my TIVO work on campus?

A: TIVO units will not function fully on the College cable television service and are not recommended.

Q: I have a Westinghouse TV and can’t get any TV channels to come up. What do I do?

A: You will need to get a manufacturer’s code. To get this choose information start to scan, go to QAM, on your TV you will see a phone number to call to get your code. You will have to give your TV serial number and then you will receive your code. Enter the code in the TV remote when prompted.
