Outdoor Pursuits (OP) strives to be the vehicle for Transformational Education by bringing the outdoors to the SUNY Cortland community. We believe life was meant for good friends and great adventures.
The Outdoor Pursuits tripping program offers all students, faculty and staff the opportunity of transformational education. Both students and faculty/staff are able to participant in experiential learning outside of the normal classroom. Students lead their peers and faculty/staff on wilderness based trips throughout the semester, giving them the opportunity to develop and improve their leadership skills.
Trips are designed to be engaging, and include all participants to work together to accomplish a common goal. This encourages everyone to work together and put aside differences. At times, this requires students to step outside of their comfort zone and try new things. Time is incorporated into each trip to reflect as a group on the experience and how to transfer the learning's to everyday life.
In addition to learning, student participants are able to meet new friends and engage in small group outings of their own after learning new outdoor skills. This helps to create a sense of community and sense of placement, thus increasing student engagement within the campus community.
