How is Adirondack Trail Blazers different from Orientation?

You will attend a new student or transfer student orientation program in June or July if coming into Cortland in the fall or in January if you are coming to Cortland in the spring. Our orientation program acquaints you with the campus, academic programs and student services. It is through this program that you will meet faculty, staff and other students and register for courses. Being an Adirondack Trail Blazer takes it one step further. ATB allows you to apply what you have learned through orientation to embrace new experiences. You will have the opportunity to reflect on how far you have come and challenge yourself to see how far you can go.

What are the dates of this year’s program? Where do we meet?

The 2018 Adirondack Trail Blazers program will run from Saturday, Aug. 18 through Friday, Aug. 24.

On Saturday, we will meet on campus at the Outdoor Pursuits Center located in the Student Life Center to check you in and prep you for the trip. You should bring all packed trip gear with you.  We will all head to Raquette Lake on Sunday where we will depart on our small group expeditions.

Upon registration, you will receive a packet of helpful information, including a personal gear list. The list contains items of clothing and personal equipment that you will need to provide such as hiking boots, water shoes, etc. The list also can be found by following the link in the column to the right.

How much does Adirondack Trail Blazers cost?

The $410 fee covers all transportation throughout the program, food (from dinner the first day - lunch the last day), room, instruction, the ropes course and camping equipment. A $100 deposit is required for your application to be accepted. Financial assistance may be available by applying through the registration form located on the registration tab located in the column on the right of this page.

What if I can’t afford the program fee and would still like to participate?

If you qualify for student aid through the Financial Aid Office, you may be eligible for a reduced rate. Choose the registration tab in the right column of this page for the application and ensure to select that you are interested in apply for financial assistance on your registration form. An $100 deposit is required for the program and should be sent in as soon as possible after submitting your application for registration. 

Do I need any prior camping experience?

No, the program is designed for active students who like to take on new challenges and meet people, but the activities are geared for participation at any level.

What is Huntington Memorial Camp?

In 1876, William West Durant built the first Great Camp of the Adirondacks on Raquette Lake. It was later donated to the College to be used for outdoor educational programs. In 2004, it was designated a National Historic Landmark. It consists of rustic cabins, meeting rooms, a dining hall, waterfront, trail system, a challenge course and 400 acres of natural land. The early history of the Adirondacks is everywhere you look.

What is Antlers?

Antlers was an old hotel built in 1886, opening in 1887, under the management of Charles Bennett. It was one of the first five hotels to be built on the lake. Seven of the original buildings were purchased in 1965 by the Faculty Student Association, now know as ASC, students, faculty, alumni and  the like have been using the facility since. The facility has rustic cabins, meeting rooms, a dining hall, waterfront and use of the challenge course at Camp Huntington.

Is there cell phone service there?

Cell phone service is sporadic at best in the Adirondacks. Leave all cell phones and technology on campus to prevent it from getting lost or damaged. In case of an emergency, parents may contact Camp Huntington at 315-354-4784 for first year students and Antlers at 315-354-4631 for transfer students.

What kind of students are Adirondack Trail Blazers?

Students from different academic majors, including undeclared and from many geographical regions that the College serves will be on your trip. It’s a great way to meet people from diverse backgrounds who will be your classmates in the fall.

Who will my leaders be?

Each group of eight students will have a lead instructor who has many years of experience in the field. Some are SUNY Cortland alumni and many teach outdoor education at the college level. You will also have a knowledgeable student mentor or faculty member who can answer your questions about SUNY Cortland.

How should I pack?

Gear to be used during ATB should be packed separately from the rest of your personal residence hall items. Your gear will be moved a few times before you arrive at Antlers or Camp Huntington. Securing any loose items you may have into bags will ensure things do not get lost. Nylon or canvas duffel bags work much better than suitcases for transportation.

What kind of equipment will I need?

All the specialized camping gear and canoes will be provided for you. You’ll need a decent pair of hiking boots, a sleeping bag and rain gear. If you need suggestions on finding these, we'll be glad to help. View the personal clothing and gear list.

Can you accommodate my dietary needs?

If known ahead of time, we can accommodate most food allergies and/or restrictions. Dietary concerns might include allergies, intolerances, vegetarian diets, etc. You may need to bring supplemental food, if you have a very restricted diet. Be as specific as possible on your medical form. We will contact you for clarification if needed.

Can I receive mail at camp?

Yes, you can receive mail at camp, however it must be delivered by Wednesday, Aug. 24 to assure you will receive it before you head back to campus. Mail is delivered by boat and although you will be at camp through Friday we cannot guarantee you would receive it before your departure.

When do I need to decide?

Adirondack Trail Blazers has limited enrollment, so the sooner you sign up, the better. Registrations will be accepted beginning on Tuesday, May 1 for 2018 program. A deposit is required with your registration, and final payment is due no later than Friday, August 3. If you cancel before the final payment is due, your deposit will be refunded in full. If final payment is not received by the due date your spot will be forfeited to another student and you will loose your deposit.
