SUNY Cortland has a strong commitment to students having a quality residential experience. Residence Life and Housing is responsible for providing a safe, secure, well-maintained environment within which students can learn, develop, and flourish. The residence hall environment supports students as they pursue their academic program, while at the same time, allowing students to relax and socialize. Each residence hall has a live-in professional residence hall director and student staff members, consisting of resident assistants, an administrative assistant, and an academic peer mentor. This pattern has been established to help create a positive community in the halls, to allow the hall staff the opportunity to know the residents and to develop programs to compliment, support and enhance the academic mission of the college. Residence Life and Housing is proud to say that they have maintained a full staff of residence hall directors, providing the highest quality services to the students.

Student staff members take an active part in making each residence hall a well-rounded and responsible community that encourages respect among all residents. Responsibilities will fall into three categories: problem solving, programming, and administration. By promoting a positive and open atmosphere, you are genuinely involved in making the residential experience valuable and meaningful to our students, an experience they will carry with them throughout their lives. If you want to make a difference in your life and the life of your peers, read more about student staff opportunities below.
Resident Assistant
The role of the Resident Assistant (RA) is to serve as a liaison between the Student Affairs staff and students. The RA's primary function is to offer peer assistance and direction to students. The RA is concerned with the growth and welfare of each individual in the hall. Resident assistants must be at least sophomore level undergraduate students. They are selected on the basis of leadership, experience, scholarship, and the desire to help residents realize their self-development opportunities through group living in college residence halls. RAs are representatives of Residence Life & Housing and are expected to act as role models.
RAs have many roles: friend, counselor, leader, programmer, enforcer of college policies, staff member, and student. Within these roles, RAs have several areas to focus on: their floor, their hall, and the college. They are to be aware of to the needs of the floor, the hall, and the college as a whole, while being supportive of the college’s programs and activities.
