Learn new skills

The Outdoor Pursuits Workshop Series is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to rent and use our equipment as well as advance participants outdoor skills in camp cooking, navigation, lead climbing, and much, much more.  The Workshop Series is hosted by our student trip leaders and is free of cost and available to any member of the Student Life Center.  No prior experience is necessary to participate.

September
  • What: Outdoor Pursuits TL Meet and Greet
  • When: Friday, September 1, 2017 at 3p.m. 
  • Where: Outdoor Pursuits Center
  • Cost: Free
  • Description:  Interested in our Outdoor Pursuits Program or becoming a trip leader? Join us on Friday, September 1st for a meet and greet with our current trip leaders. We will be sharing information about our program including workshops and trips as well as our trip leader process. We also plan on playing an outdoor movie on our outdoor movie screen and making popcorn and s'mores. So come on by and hang out with us.

  • What: OP Camping Equipment Show and Tell
  • Where: Outdoor Pursuits Center
  • When: Friday, September 22 at 3p.m.
  • Cost: Free
  • Description: Come see all of the outdoor equipment that is available to you for rent in Outdoor Pursuits. Learn how to use the equipment and then let us help you plan your own trip with friends.  We will have all kinds of gear set up and available for you to try out and ask questions.  Come get outside with us!!

  • What: Bike Maintenance and Rules of the Road 
  • Where: Outdoor Pursuits Center
  • When: Wednesday, Oct 11 at 2p.m.
  • Cost: Free
  • Description: What are all of these parts for?  Join us as we learn about bikes, how to fix a flat and much more.  Fixing that pesky flat is easier than you think.  Learn what happens when brakes break.  Always dragging, not stopping, squeaky, we can fix it.  Come learn with us as we perform some basic maintenance on bikes and share rules of the road.  Feel free to bring your own or work on one of ours in our shop.   
  • What: Exploring the NOLS Cookery
  • Where: Outdoor Pursuits Center
  • When: Cancelled - moved to spring semester
  • Cost: Free
  • Description: Have you ever wanted to cook delicious meals while you’re camping? Curious about what that weird looking contraption is they call a whisperlite? Join us for an afternoon of instruction where you will leave feeling comfortable knowing how to use one! We will explore the NOLS cookery and pick a recipe to cook up some tasty treats!

  • What: Lead Climbing Clinic
  • Where: SUNY Cortland Climbing Wall
  • When: Wednesday  Nov 1 at 7p.m.
  • Cost: Free
  • Description: Take your climbing skills to the next level with our lead climbing workshop. Techniques of lead climbing will be covered, and you’ll get the chance to mock lead a route at our wall! All lead climbing equipment will be free of charge. Climbing shoes will be available for rent for $1 at equipment check out.
