Women's Rugby Captures Conference Crown

SUNY Cortland hosted the Excelsior Conference Championship game this Saturday against Hamilton College, after coming in first seed at the end of regular season play (5-1). The season started off strong with several straight wins, interrupted by a loss to Colgate University. The loss couldn't have come at a better time, as it lit a flame under Cortland and strengthened their determination to finish off the season as they started it. This proved to be a strong motivator as the Peacefrogs followed the loss with three solid wins, including the Championship game, earning them the title of Champions of the Excelsior League. Cortland moves on to play another team from a DII New York State Conference next weekend; time, place and opponent to be announced soon.
Saturday's championship game included great efforts from the entire team, ending in a final score of 24-10. Cortland hoped to face the team that bested them earlier in the season, but seeding landed Hamilton at the number 2 spot, putting an end to Colgate's season. Having previously beaten Hamilton 31-19, Cortland knew they were capable of winning again, but that Hamilton would be returning to the pitch with a vengeance. Unfortunately for Hamilton, vengeance wasn't enough to beat the Peacefrogs, who's hard work, size, athleticism and knowledge of the game maintained the upper hand on the scoreboard throughout the 80 minutes of play. Cortland is looking forward to returning to the pitch the rest of the week in preparation for their next matchup. Great efforts to all Peacefrogs who are perpetuating such a successful season in the new conference!
