Wrestling Earns NCWA National Bids
The SUNY Cortland Club Wrestling team participated in its first ever NCWA Northeastern Conference Regionals Tournament this previous weekend on Saturday March 2nd in New Hampshire. The team sent 7 guys to compete - the the second smallest amount entered by a team in the tournament. In this regionals tournament, every top 5 wrestler in each weight class received an automatic bid to the upcoming national tournament in Dallas, Texas. SUNY Cortland’s Julian Staiano (Sophomore, Saugerties, NY) at the 133 pound weight class and Joe Byrne (Freshmen, West Islip, NY) at the 165 pound weight class both finished 4th, receiving automatic bids to Nationals. Justin Altro (Sophomore, New Paltz, NY), who also is the president and coach of the club, finished in 6th place in the 133 pound weight class and also earned a wildcard bid to wrestle in the national tournament. Altro was also nominated as one of the best student leaders, but lost a close vote to a senior at the Northeastern Wrestling Club. The Cortland Club Wrestling Team is only going to get stronger as the years go by, and to be recognized by the other teams in the Northeastern Conference is a great step forward. Our roster is 30 strong and we plan to be more active in tournaments, meets, and become more of a contender in the NCWA team dual tournament and regionals tournament next year and for the years to come.
