Instructor Todd McAdam is a third-degree black belt and certified instructor of Washin-Ryu Karate and
representative of Master Hidy Ochiai, world renowned martial artist and author. The Washin-Ryu Karate
Program at Cortland is open to students, faculty/staff and all Student Life Center members ages 6 and up.

Students will practice kata (form), situational self-defense techniques, sport sparring, and strength and flexibility drills, immersing themselves in the full range of traditional martial arts training. The centuries old tradition of Japanese martial arts has its roots in two distinct disciplines: jutsu or jitsu, the technique of self-defense or “martial craft” (how to best defeat an enemy);  and Do, the “way of life,” an art and practice of cultivating a better self.

The Washin-ryu Karate-Do training model places an equal emphasis on the development of mind and body so one truly masters the self. To that end, participants progress at their own pace while learning the principles of self defense, physical fitness, mind and body control, confidence, concentration, relaxation and inner peace.

Students are also eligible for admission to periodic seminars, tournaments and other Washin-Ryu activities.
