The Evolution of Electronic Mail

Introducing Office 365 for Education.

With the growing dependency on critical communications happening via email it is time to evolve our messaging infrastructure. SUNY Cortland has made the strategic decision to partner with Microsoft and leverage our SUNY Contract to bring about a more efficient, reliable and robust communications platform.

The email infrastructure of the College is at a cross-roads.  The server and storage infrastructure is aging and needs to be replaced.  Additionally, faculty and staff need more storage.

Last summer and fall, Information Resources held several meetings and open forums to discuss “Where Should Email Live?”  After many questions and answers, the community gave positive feedback to move to Microsoft’s hosted environment for Office 365 in Education.  The President’s Cabinet approved this recommendation in December 2013.  Since then, Information Resources has been working with SUNY and Microsoft to acquire the licensing for Office 365.

We now have the required licensing, and will begin migrating email mailboxes to the new environment in April 2014.  Our goal is to have everyone on the new Office 365 platform before fall semester 2014.
