What is a Graduate Assistantship?

Graduate Assistants are students that have been accepted into a Master's program at SUNY Cortland and are given the opportunity to work within an academic department or other units on campus. There are a large number of departments within the SUNY Cortland community that offer these great opportunities.

Graduate Assistantships may take two forms:

1. Research - some students may be assigned primary research responsibilities for a specific project or program.

2. Teaching - some students may be assigned teaching responsibilities or other instructor tasks as assigned by a faculty supervisor.

3. Athletics - some students may be assigned coaching responsibilities for various athletic teams.

4. Offices - some students may be assigned responsibilities in offices of various departments including Graduate Studies, Sponsored Programs, ASAP or Institutional Research.

Compensation

Graduate Assistantships typically provide a maximum of 6 credit hours of tuition per semester coupled with an academic year stipend averaging between $5,000 - $7,000 for a maximum of 20 hours per week for the academic year. Out-of-state graduate students who have Graduate Assistantships will not be responsible for paying the difference between resident and non-resident tuition for the six credit hours. Graduate students who do not receive a stipend work approximately 10 hours per week while class is in session.
