Continuing Student Scholarships

DEADLINE - Monday, February 01, 2010.

The Scholarship Application is located on your myRedDragon account. Go to the Student Online Tab.  You will then see the scholarship application link under the Financial Advisement.

Application will be available by mid-November, 2009.

Interested students must have one full academic year left of study (24 credit hours or more) with plans to receive a degree no earlier than May 2011 for 2010-2011 scholarships.

Notification of scholarship recipients will take place in April, 2010 unless noted otherwise.

Scholarship funds will be paid to your student account as follows: 50% paid fall 2010, 50% paid spring 2011.

Professor Louise Margaret Abernethy Scholarship in Education

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a senior or graduate student seeking a degree in education with a grade point average of at least 2.7, who is a resident of Cortland County and has superior performance in field work placement(s).
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,000.

African American Gospel Music Award
(Contact Performing Arts Department for More Information)

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to students demonstrating strength in piano/keyboard, percussion, bass guitar/lead guitar, vocal and student directorship.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $500.
  • Application: Contact the Performing Arts Department.

Alpha Delta Junior Award
(No Application)

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Presented to outstanding students who are in the top 10 percent of the junior class. Other considerations include leadership, professional promise, and contributions to the community. Funding giving to students during senior year.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,000.
  • Application: None. Candidates for the Alpha Delta Awards must first be nominated by a faculty member. Nominated students interview with the Associate Dean, recommendations are forwarded to the Associate Provost for review in committee.  Consult Associate Dean for details.
  • Deadline: If seeking additional information from Associate Dean do so by November 1.

Alpha Kappa Phi/Agonian/Sigma Sigma Sigma/Sigma Rho Sigma Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Available to seniors with a minimum 3.0 GPA who are involved in campus life and demonstrate financial need.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $4,000. (Funds to be awarded immediately)
  • Application: Interested students must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well.
  • Deadline: February 2, 2009. Applicants will go though an interview process.
  • Notification: Fall 2009.

Alpha Sigma Alpha Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Presented to students with a minimum 2.5 GPA and demonstrated financial need. Must be a sophomore or junior at time the funds are awarded.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,000.
  • Application: Interested students must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well.
  • Notification: By July.

Arethusa Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Created by the sisters of the former campus sorority Arethusa, this scholarship is awarded to a full-time sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student having a 2.5 GPA or better and demonstrated financial need. Leadership and involvement in campus life is taken into consideration.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,000.
  • Application: Interested students must also complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well.

Assistant Coach Scholarship
(Contact Athletics Department for More Information)

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Interested students must be a SUNY Cortland student in one of the following categories:
    -Matriculated or non-matriculated graduate student, or
    -Matriculated or non-matriculated undergraduate student with plans to enroll in a graduate program within
    one-and-a-half years.
    -Current graduate students are not eligible
    -Recipient may not participate as an athlete in intercollegiate athletics
  • Award: Tuition support for up to four 3-credit courses (or equivalent) per year.
  • Application: Contact the athletics department.
  • Deadline: Applications are accepted on a continual basis.

Harriet Bentley Memorial Award

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a student who is either a member of Nu Sigma Chi sorority, a relative of a former member of the sorority, or related to an alumnus of SUNY Cortland. Must be a junior at time of submitting application.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $600. 

BorgWarner Morse TEC Scholarship for Community Service Volunteers

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to students in good social standing, with a 3.0 GPA who have volunteered at local community services organizations.  First preference given to family members of BorgWarner Morse TEC employees living in Central and Southern New York
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,000.

Van Akin Burd Memorial Scholarship in English

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Established through a gift by SUNY Cortland Distinguished Professor Emeritus Van Akin Burd. This scholarship is awarded to students with demonstrated financial need, with preference for students majoring in English who are juniors, seniors, or graduate students in English.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,000.

Jean K. & Dr. William P. Cadwallader Chemistry & Physics Teachers Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Need/Criteria-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Established through a gift from Mrs. Jean K. and Dr. William P. Cadwallader, this scholarship is to encourage talented college students to enter teaching careers in high school chemistry and physics, so that they may inspire a new generation of high school students to become scientists.
  • Award: Annual award up to $2,500.

James F. Casey '50 Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Eligible students must have had three semesters at Cortland and at least one semester as a residence hall staff member or Hall Council president. A minimum 3.0 GPA is required.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $800.
  • Application: Interested students must also complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well.

Yuki and Wah Chip Chin Memorial Scholarship
(Contact the James M. Clark Center for International Education)

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: The main purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance for graduate students from the Capital Normal University to attend SUNY Cortland. The scholarship may also be used to benefit the following student types listed in priority order:
    1. Chinese undergraduate (juniors or seniors) or graduate students attending SUNY Cortland from other Mainland China universities.
    2. Graduate students attending SUNY Cortland from universities in other Asian countries.
    3. American undergraduate (junior or senior) students or graduate students enrolled at SUNY Cortland who choose to study in the following order of priority at: Capital Normal University in Beijing; other Mainland China universities; other Asian universities.
  • Award: Amount of award is determined by the International Programs Office.

Robert E. Clark & Marilyn M. Clark '51 Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded annually to a junior or senior student planning to become a teacher in the elementary education or physical education field.  Eligible students are those majoring in childhood and/or early childhood education or physical education with demonstrated financial need and a minimum overall grade point average of 2.5.
  • Award: Annual award up to $1,000.
  • Application: Interested students must also complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well.

Class of 1953 Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Available to a senior with a 3.0 grade point average or better and demonstrated leadership on or off campus.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,000.

Class of '67 Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Available to a student with a 3.0 grade point average or better, demonstrated financial need and outstanding leadership on or off campus and involvement with extracurricular activities.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,000.
  • Application: Interested students must also complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well.

Class of '85 Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Available to a senior with a 2.7 grade point average or better and demonstrated financial need. Contributions made to the campus community are taken into consideration as well.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $750.
  • Application: Interested students must also complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well.

Community Scholarship for Student Volunteers and Interns

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: *Open to all majors. Must have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours at SUNY Cortland. Minimum 2.5 GPA required when applying. *Preference given to students who are working or volunteering at the Cortland YWCA, physical education majors and females.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,000.
  • Application: Interested students must also complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well.

Cortland County Home Bureau Award

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Available to a sophomore or junior majoring in speech pathology and audiology with a 2.5 GPA or better and demonstrated financial need.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $500.
  • Application: Interested students must also complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well.

Cortland's Urban Recruitment of Educators (C.U.R.E.) Scholarships
(Contact C.U.R.E. Office for More Information)

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based but in order to receive funding recipients are required to file a FAFSA. PELL and TAP awards are figured into the equation of the award amount which funds recipients costs for tuition, books, room and board.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Admitted freshmen and continuing students majoring in areas of education who demonstrate high academic achievement and are citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Applicants who are transfer or continuing students must be admitted to a major that leads to teacher certification or, if a current freshman, be listed as "waiting" in a major that leads to teacher certification. A scholarship award for transfer or continuing students is contingent upon available space and spring semester grades reflecting an overall GPA that meets or exceeds the minimum requirement for student teaching in their major.
  • First Priority - given to individuals from groups who have been historically underrepresented or underserved in the teaching profession and who demonstrate a commitment to teach in high-need urban schools. For the purposes of C.U.R.E., these groups include, but are not limited to, African American, Hispanic, Native American or Alaskan Native individuals or individuals from an economically disadvantaged background.
  • Second Priority - given to any other individuals from groups not historically underrepresented in the teaching profession who demonstrate a commitment to teach in high-need urban schools.
  • Award: Varies. Annual award helps to defray college costs above and beyond state and federal aid the student receives.
  • Continuation of Funding: Based on student remaining comitted to C.U.R.E Program and satisfactory academic progress in a major leading to teacher certification.
  • Availability: Contingent upon annual availability of funds. Number given varies.
  • Additional Application Material: Candidates must fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) available from the Financial Aid Office.

Jay Cummings Program Fund for Field Biology
(Contact Biology Department for More Information)

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: This scholarship was established through many gifts from SUNY Cortland's alumni, emeriti, faculty, staff and friends in recognition of Jay Cummings' many years of outstanding service as Assistant Director of SUNY Cortland's Outdoor Education Center at Raquette Lake. This program fund will be used by the professor in charge of the field biology courses taught at Raquette Lake to accomplish any of the following activities: stipends to fund program fees for students enrolled in the SUNY Cortland Field Biology courses (currently Biology 310 & 510), with demonstrated financial need with preference for students who apply with higher GPAs in Biology coursework.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $500.

Nellie Davidson Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Presented to students with at least a 2.0 GPA and demonstrated financial need. Must be a sophomore or junior at time funds are awarded.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,000.
  • Application: Interested students must also complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well.

Gerald N. DiGiusto Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to an senior student majoring in studio art.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,500.
  • Availability: One available.

Diversity Fellowships

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to students who will contribute to the diversity of the SUNY Cortland campus. Students having a diverse background or historical disadvantages are encouraged to apply.
  • Award: Up to a $10,000 annual award. Comprised of partial tuition waiver and stipend. Amount is determined annually. Award covers above and beyond the state and federal aid the student receives.
  • Continuation of Funding: Must maintain a 3.0GPA. Renewable based on state funding.

Dominion Scholarships

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Presented to geology majors with 3.0 + GPA's who show preference for research and interest in the environmental geology and environmental sciences areas.
  • Award: Up to a $1,000 per semester for up to 5 semesters.
  • Continuation of Funding: Must maintain a 3.0 GPA.

Peter F. Eisenhardt First Year Learning Community Scholarships
(No Application Necessary)

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Presented to the top students from each of the Four Learning Communities: Excellence in Earth and Sky, Excellence in our Storied Land, Excellence in Technology First, Excellence in World First.
  • Award: One-time award of $500.  
  • Notification: At the yearly Honors Convocation.

Emergency Medicine Physicians Sponsored Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a full-time junior or senior biology major with a preference given to pre-med students with an interest in emergency medicine.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,000.

Faculty Senate Memorial Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a full-time student in good academic standing demonstrating interest or ability in student governance and/or other types of leadership responsibilities on campus.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,000.

John Fantauzzi '58 Scholarships

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Continuing students who are the children of immigrants to the United States (first-generation American students). Awards based on academic achievement (minimum 2.7 GPA), leadership and contributions to student life.
  • Award: Renewable yearly award of $3,400.
  • Continuation of Funding: Continuation of funding based on student maintaining a 2.7 GPA beginning with the end of the first year and monitored annually.

General Alumni Scholarships

  • Scholarship Type: Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Presented to a sophmore or junior with at least a 2.5 GPA and demonstrated financial need. Must be a sophomore or junior at time funds are awarded.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $700.
  • Application: Interested students must also complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well.
  • Notification: By July.

 

Charles A. Gibson Study Abroad Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Available to students accepted to a study abroad program, who have a minimum 2.5 GPA and demonstrated financial need.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,150.
  • Availability: Amount and number available is determined annually.

Vince Gonino Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to an continuing student who has completed one full year of study at SUNY Cortland, has a 2.5 GPA or better, is pursuing a degree in Physical Education or kinesiology and demonstrates financial need. Those taken into consideration demonstrate characteristics that exemplify those of Vincent Gonino:
  1. A desire to "make a difference" with children and adolescents.
  2. Commitment and involvement.
  3. Honesty, loyalty and integrity.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,000.

Betty Blase Goodstein '48 Scholarship in Education & Physical Education

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Presented to a senior student with a minimum 3.0 GPA who has completed at least 12 credit hours of study at SUNY Cortland. First Preference given to those majoring in Early Childhood Education or Special Education/Childhood Education with an emphasis on working with visually- or hearing-impaired children. Second preference given to those majoring in Special Education/Childhood Education. Third preference given to those majoring in Early Childhood Education. Fourth preference to those majoring in Physical Education with an emphasis on working with special needs children.
  • Award: One-time award of $1,000.

Charles T. Griffes Music Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a sophomore or junior musical theater major or a student pursuing a music minor or concentration.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1500.

Graduate Opportunity Program Tuition Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based
  • Eligibility Criteria: Available to matriculated graduate students who were former EOP, HEOP, or SEEK program undergraduates.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $500.
  • Availability: Determined by allocations from New York State to SUNY Cortland.
  • Application: Available in the Graduate Studies Office. In addition, students must also complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well.
  • Deadline: 30 days prior to the start of a semester.
  • Notification: At the start of the semester.

Alice Thorpe Hoppey '56 Scholarship in Education

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a junior or senior student demonstrating financial need and majoring in education or physical education. Preference given to students from Port Jervis, Brentwood, Newfield from Middle Country, and Ward Melville from Three Village who have demonstrated academic promise, leadership and involvement in campus activities.
  • Award: Annual award up to $1,000.
  • Availability: One available each year.
  • Application: Interested students must also complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well. 

Myrl Rose Crocker Howe Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Available to a female upperclassman majoring in elementary education. Applicant must have 3.0 GPA and have demonstrated financial need. *Preference given to a single parent.
  • Award: Renewable award of $500 is available to an upperclassman.
  • Continuation of Funding: Based on student maintaining a 3.0 GPA beginning with the end of the first year and monitored annually.
  • Application: Interested students must also complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well. 

Myrl Rose Crocker Howe/McGraw Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Available to a female upperclassman majoring in elementary education. Preference given to McGraw High School graduates or graduates of a high school near McGraw. Candidate must have 3.0 GPA and have demonstrated financial need.
  • Award: Renewable award of $500 is available to an upperclassman.
  • Continuation of Funding: Based on student maintaining a 3.0 GPA beginning with the end of the first year and monitored annually.
  • Application: Interested students must also complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well. 

 Janey Hutchinson Music Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Available to a senior student majoring in early childhood education with a music minor.
  • Award: Annual award of up to $1,000.
  • Application: Contact the Performing Arts Department.

Institute for Civic Engagement Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all majors who are freshmen, sophomores, or juniors at the time of application. Must have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours at SUNY Cortland. Minimum 2.5 GPA required when applying. Students must exhibit exemplary leadership characteristics and be active participants in the civic engagement activities of the college (which include community action, social justice, service-learning, volunteer work, interships, and campus service).
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,000.

Dr. Peter Jeffers Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a continuing student majoring in chemistry who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement.
  • Award: Award of $1,000 (may be renewable).
  • Continuation of Funding: Based on student remaining committed to a degree chemistry and maintaining positive academic progress. Progress review begins with the end of the first year and is monitored annually.

Dr. J. Robert '58 & Maureen Johnson Professional Studies Scholarship
(No Application Necessary)

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded during junior year to a Professional Studies major with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Student must have enrolled at Cortland during freshman year and be on track for graduation.
  • Award: Annual award of up to $1,000. Funds applied to student's account during senior year.
  • Notification: April.

James Kradyna Summer Field Camp Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a geology student enrolled in SUNY Cortland's five-week summer geology course offered at Brauer Field Station near Albany, NY. Applicants must be a geology major (or equivalent) at an accredited 4-year institution and have earned a demonstrable record of academic achievement.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $500.

The Kronman Family Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Established by George Kronman '76, Mindy Spector Kronman '78, David Kronman '80, Sandra Katzenstein Kronman, Albert Kronman, and Eda Joyce Kronman '70, this scholarship was established to support the Department of Geology and is awarded annually to a student with demonstrated financial need and an enthusiastic passion for geology.

Lambda Phi Delta Service Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Established by the former brothers of the Lambda Phi Delta Fraternity to support students who have a positive record of active participation and impact in service to the Cortland community. The award is restricted to rising juniors, seniors and graduate students who have had a positive impact on the SUNY Cortland campus and/or the CortlandCommunity.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,000.

M & T Bank C.U.R.E. Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to fund a  junior C.U.R.E. student.
  • Award: Renewable award of up to $3875.

Dr. John A. Macphee Scholarship
(Contact the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies for More Information)

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student within the Recreation and Leisure Studies Department with high academic achievement and professional promise.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,000 is available to support off-campus field work or attendance at a national professional conference devoted to the leisure services profession.

  • Deadline: October 1st for the Spring/Summer award and February 28 for the Summer/Fall award.

Helen Y. Nelson Memorial Scholarship in Music

New York State Home Bureau Award

Non-Traditional Student Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: : Awarded to a full or part-time student having completed at least 12 credit hours of study at SUNY Cortland and taking at least 6 credit hours in the semester the scholarship is received. Student is non-traditional in the sense that his/her college education has been interrupted. Age is not a factor. Both males and females are eligible. Preference given to deserving candidates who demonstrates: financial need, and has earned a minimum 2.5 GPA.
  • Award: Renewable award of $500.

Fr. Edward J. O'Heron Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a junior, senior, or graduate student majoring in English or Adolescence Education/English. Minimum grade point average of 3.0 required. 500-word essay required. Qualities of caring, community service, and helping others as demonstrated by the life of Fr. O'Heron. Intellectual promise as an English teacher or writer also taken into consideration.
  • Award: One-time award of $1,000.

Kristen O'Neil Memorial Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Established by the SUNY Cortland Tae Kwon Do Club and family of Kristen O'Neil in her memory. This scholarship is awarded to a continuing student who has actively participated in a sport club for at least two full semesters. Undergraduate or graduate students with at least one semester remaining at SUNY Cortland may apply. 2.5 minimum cumulative GPA required.
  • Award: One-time award of $1,000.

Overseas Academic Program Award

  • Eligibility Criteria: Available to students accepted to a study abroad program, who are citizens of the United States or permanent residents having a minimum 2.7 GPA. Academic achievement and extracurricular activities are also taken into consideration.

Angela Pace Scholarship in Education

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Junior or senior majoring in elementary education. Candidates must have academic promise and financial need.
  • Award: Annual award up to $1,000 is available to juniors for two years and senior students for one year.
  • Continuation of Funding: Based on student maintaining a 2.5 GPA beginning with the end of the first year and monitored annually.

Fred E. and Mildred Becker Page Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Presented to students with at least a 2.0 GPA and demonstrated financial need. Must be a junior or senior at time funds are awarded.

Maxwell and Myrtle Park Education Award

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Presented to a junior education major with a minimum 2.7 GPA who spent his or her freshman and sophmore years at SUNY Cortland.
  • Award: One-time award of $500.
  • Application: Students should apply but may also be nominated by an Education Department faculty member.

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Presented to full-time, second-semester sophomores or full-time juniors who have attended SUNY Cortland for at least two full semesters, have a minimum 3.2 GPA and have contributed to the College community. Candidates are considered on leadership ability and character. Award amounts are based on financial need.

B. Gail Reed '67 Scholarship for Study Abroad Students

  • Eligibility Criteria: Established by Gail Reed for a student participating in the SUNY Cortland Study Abroad Program. Ms. Reed made this scholarship possible to recognize the profound impact on her life that her own study abroad experience had and to acknowledge and thank the founder of the program, Dr. Willi Uschald. This scholarship will be awarded to a student with demonstrated financial need and high academic achievement.

H. Kendall Reynolds Memorial Scholarship in Physics

  • Eligibility Criteria: Named in honor of a nuclear physicist and former dean of arts and sciences at Cortland, this scholarship is awarded to a junior physics major with a minimum 3.0 GPA who has demonstrated leadership within the Physics Department or College. Scholarship applied to recipients financial aid package during his/her senior year.

Jo Schaffer Scholarship in Art History

The Scheier Family Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Established by Ira J. Scheier '62, this scholarship will be awarded to a student with demonstrated financial need and high academic achievement.
  • Award: Renewable award of $1868.
  • Continuation of Funding: Based on student maintaining academic promise.

John L. Sciera Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Available to a student enrolled in athletic training who has a minimum 3.0 GPA and is pursuing a career in the field.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,500.

Sigma Delta Phi Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: This scholarship, created by the former sisters of the Sigma Delta Phi Sorority, requires that candidates must have completed at least two full semester at SUNY Cortland at the time of application, have at least one full year of study remaining before graduation and have a 2.5 or better GPA. Applicants must also demonstrate active participation in campus life, social involvement with other students, fulfillment of personal goals, improvement of campus life and educational opportunities.
  • Award: One-time award of $500.

Spina-Friedgen '71 Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Established by Ralph Friedgen and Gloria Spina-Friedgen '71, this scholarship shall be awarded to a senior who is majoring in education or physical education, has a 3.0+ GPA and has demonstrated financial need.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,000.

Student Government Association Leadership Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Sophomores, juniors, seniors or graduate students with a minimum 2.5 GPA demonstrating leadership skills through SGA or other campus service projects as first priority, with community service in the Cortland area as a second priority.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,250.

SUNY Cortland Graduate Assistantships

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Presented to master degree candidates who work as graduate assistants in academic/administrative departments.
  • Award: Comprised of partial tuition waiver and stipend. Amount is determined annually.
  • Continuation of Funding: Must maintain good academic standing.

Judson H. Taylor Community Service Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Established by the Student Government Association (SGA) in honor of President Emeritus Judson H. Taylor, on the occasion of his retirement from SUNY Cortland, to reinforce the value of making a difference through volunteering and to create a lasting legacy that honors his contributions to SUNY Cortland. This scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated a commitment to community betterment by volunteering or interning at local schools or non-profit organizations. Award criteria include commitment to community service, demonstrated financial need and a minimum 2.75 GPA.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,000.

Gerald P. Theisen '53 & Ethel Mahan Theisen '55 Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: This scholarship, established by Gerald P. Theisen '53 and Ethel Mahan Theisen '55, was created with the intention to give bright deserving students the opportunity to benefit from a SUNY Cortland education. Students with high academic achievement (3.0 GPA) and demonstrated financial need will be considered.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $2,000.

Marion C. Thompson Memorial Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Available to junior, senior or graduate students who are English or Professional Writing majors having demonstrated academic success and financial need.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,500.
  • Application: Available in the English Department. Interested students must also have a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file by the deadline. FAFSA is available in the Financial Aid Office.
  • Deadline: November 15 for the spring 2008 semester, February 29 for the fall 2008 semester.

Donald '59 and Donna Bell Traver '59 Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a SUNY Cortland undergraduate (freshmen and new transfers included) who is majoring in physical education. Preference given to those who work hard to achieve success and have demonstrated financial need.
  • Award: Annual award of up to $1,000 is available as a multi-year commitment.
  • Continuation of Funding: Good academic standing, commitment to Physical Education, and continued financial need.

Robert E. Vogel '54 Physical Education Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based
  • Eligibility Criteria: This schoalrship was established by Robert E. Vogel '54 in appreciation of his education at SUNY Cortland.  This scholarship is established to help junior and senior-level undergraduate students majoring in physical education, who have demonstrated financial need, with first preference for those students from Erie County, or if none qualify, from the entire Western New York region.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,000.

Paul Volk '50 and Amy Volk Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Need/Criteria-based
  • Eligibility Criteria: Established by Paul and Amy Volk to honor the excellent education Paul received at SUNY Cortland and in gratitude for the financial support he received through the GI Bill. Paul and Amy strongly believe that education opens doors to opportunities beyond imagination. It is their desire that this scholarship recognize enthusiastic students majoring in Physical Education who are studying to become teachers. Awarded to a continuing SUNY Cortland student who is majoring in physical education, has a 2.7+ GPA and demonstrated financial need.
  • Award: Annual award of up to $1,000 is available as a multi-year commitment.

  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a junior or senior with a 3.0+ GPA at SUNY Cortland. Must be a permanent resident of one of the following Western New York counties:  Erie, Niagara, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Orleans, Livingston, Genesee, or Wyoming.  Applicant must exhibit outstanding character, community involvement and participation in Cortland activities.

  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded annually to a continuing non-traditional student with high academic achievement.

Spiegle Willcox Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a continuing student who is participating in instrumental ensembles and demonstrates outstanding musical performance skills and financial need.

Marilou B.Wright '68 Scholarship for Non-Traditional Women

  • Eligibility Criteria: At the time of application students must 1) have completed 24 credit hours at SUNY Cortland; 2) be a sophomore or above; 3) be at least 25 years old; 4) be an undergraduate woman; 5) be enrolled as a full-time student; 6) have a 3.0 GPA.

Dr. Arden P. Zipp Scholarship 

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Established by Dr. Arden P. Zipp, Distinguished Teaching Professor of Chemistry, Emeritus, this scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student majoring in Chemistry or Adolescent Education Chemsitry at SUNY Cortland.  Recipients must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative average, be entering her/his sophomore year and have taken at least 8 credit hours of chemistry at SUNY Cortland.
