Applying for financial aid at SUNY Cortland begins with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is an application for federal student aid that collects the basic information needed to determine your eligibility for all of the financial aid programs sponsored by the federal government. You can complete the application online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The federal title IV school code for SUNY Cortland is 002843.
It also is recommended that prior to completion of the FAFSA on the Web, the student and one parent, if the student is a dependent student, apply for a federal PIN. The PIN application can be found at www.pin.ed.gov. You will receive a federal Student Aid Report (SAR) four to six weeks after filing the FAFSA. Your SAR will indicate your expected family contribution for federal student aid programs as calculated by the federal processor. SUNY Cortland’s Financial Advisement Office receives this information electronically from the student aid processor, so it is not necessary to send us your SAR. Financial aid awards will be mailed on or about March 15.
If you are a New York state resident, you will initiate the TAP application process by completing the FAFSA. You will be given the opportunity to complete the New York state TAP application electronically. Select the message for New York state residents and follow the instructions to complete the electronic TAP application. SUNY Cortland’s TAP Codes are 0910 for undergraduate students and 5605 for graduate students.
If for some reason you do not complete the electronic TAP application, a paper application called the Express TAP Application (ETA) will be mailed to you to complete. If you have questions on completing the TAP ETA, need a duplicate ETA or want to check on the status of your TAP award, you can go to TAP status.
Be sure to file the FAFSA as soon as possible. SUNY Cortland’s recommended filing due date is March 1. You should file by this date to be considered for the best possible financial aid package. Your family also should make every effort to complete federal tax returns prior to completing the FAFSA, as this will make the process much simpler. If your taxes are not going to be completed until after March 1, we recommend you complete the application with estimated tax information.
If you are applying to transfer to SUNY Cortland for the spring semester and you completed the FAFSA for your previous college the preceding fall semester, you may contact the Federal Processing Center at (800) 433-3243 to update your school information. Visit them online and choose Make Corrections to a Processed FAFSA. Add SUNY Cortland’s code to your school list. The federal title IV school code for SUNY Cortland is 002843.
