COR 101: The Cortland Experience was initiated at SUNY Cortland in the fall of 1997. The course was developed from the growing field of research and practice regarding the first year experience and previous initiatives at SUNY Cortland. First year seminars are a nationwide initiative, developed in different formats, but they typically share common foundational themes such as developmental and metacognition theories, involvement, and integration themes.
COR 101 recognizes that academic success manifests in how students manage the individual and interpersonal challenges of college life, and is achieved when students are thoughtful and invested in their experience as a whole. Reaching a balance between autonomy and social responsibility is central to the mission of the COR 101 program.
In 2007, Cortland has 60 scheduled sections of COR, 54 of which are discipline-specific.
