SOC 485 - Capital PunishmentDeals with the death penalty as an element of American criminal justice policy. Topics include the development of the modern system of capital punishment; the responsibilities and experiences of attorneys, jurors, prison personnel and others in its implementation; the social network of death row; and empirical research on deterrence, sentencing disparities by race, the death penalty's fiscal impact, the estimated probability of miscarriages of justice, and other issues in the current policy debate. Category D. Prerequisite: SOC 100 or 150 or ANT 102. (3 cr. hr.)
