Program Details

Physical Education: Concentration in Outdoor Adventure Education [PEM_OAE] (Major)

The outdoor adventure education concentration in the physical education major is designed to provide students with an opportunity to gain experience and knowledge in outdoor adventure education appropriate for physical education settings. This program prepares students in adventure models and theory as well as develops leadership and practical skills needed to effectively implement this type of curriculum in schools.

Practical experiences include, but are not limited to, inclusive outdoor education, practicum in adventure activities or outdoor adventure activities for teachers, and several outdoor activity classes.

Program Requirements

Students must fulfill all the requirements for the physical education major. Additional courses required for the outdoor adventure education concentration are listed below.

A. Required Courses: 6.5-7 credit hours
  • PED 527 - Models and Theories of Adventure Learning (3 cr. hr.)
  • PED 313 - Leadership in Physical Education (3 cr. hr.)
  • PED 349 - Physical Education Practicum (.5-3 cr. hr.) (For PED 181 , 281 or 308 )
B. Select One From the Following: 3 credit hours
  • PED 531 - Inclusive Outdoor Education (3 cr. hr.)
  • REC 310 - Wilderness and American Culture (3 cr. hr.)
  • REC 375 - Wilderness First Responder (3 cr. hr.)
  • REC 379 - Outdoor Recreation Activities (3 cr. hr.)
  • REC 462 - Environmental and Outdoor Education (3 cr. hr.)
C. Activity Courses: 4 credit hours
  • PED 157 - Orienteering Activities for Educators (1 cr. hr.)
