Student Select 2019
April 25 - May 18, 2019

The Student Select project is traditionally a juried exhibition. The Art Exhibition Association invited Holland Houdek to be this year’s juror. She is a practicing artist, Assistant Professor in Professional Practice and Art Gallery Director at Nazareth College, Rochester, NY. On April 22, Mrs. Houdek selected 68 works from 31 artists representing sculpture, ceramics, painting, drawing, photography, fibers, bookmaking, graphic design and video. After careful consideration, Holland Houdek selected three students as winners of the Student Select 2019 exhibition. The First Prize went to Darien Fernandez, a fourth-year BFA student with a concentration in Painting. His oil painting titled Feed the Animals 1 along with his other works accepted in the show were recognized by the Juror for demonstrating high technical ability in various media. Dew, 2018, a welded steel wall object constructed by third-year Criminology major with a Studio Art minor, Reagan Mayer, received a Second Prize. The Third Prize was awarded to a third-year BFA student with a concentration in Painting, Maryam Adib, for her mixed media painting The Individual v. The Collective.

The annual exhibition presented in the Dowd Gallery offers students a place to showcase their work in a professional environment. The three-week event provides an opportunity to highlight tangible outcomes produced by course work as well as from students’ own personal creative activity outside of the classroom. The diverse selection of art created by art majors, non-traditional students and non-art majors alike demonstrates their creativity, acquired skills and enthusiasm, and also honors the quality and dedication of the faculty at SUNY Cortland.

The students featured in this year's show are as follows:

Maryam Adib, Kasey Berbary, Anna Brasted, Nicole Bravo, Kelly Brown, Steve Buscemi, Zaccharie Charvolin, Taylor Cook, Kali Cornwell, Sierra Dell, Darien Fernandez, Alex Gentner, Mackenzie Green, Kaitlyn Hession, Kayla Hinkle, Megan Howland, Courtney Maurin, Reagan Mayer, Ryan McCarthy, Royal McDonnell, Jillian McEvoy, Abigail Monson, Mike Morris, Megan O’Brien, Sydney Palmer Bishop, Waylon Partridge, Rafael Mejia Perez, Samantha Reali, Shane Reilly, Erin Schiano, and Theresa Valletta.
