Continuing Student Scholarships

2012-2013 DEADLINE - Wednesday, February 01, 2012.

The Scholarship Application is located on your myRedDragon account. Go to the Student Tab. You will then see the scholarship application link under the Financial Aid section.

2012-2013 Eligibility Rules:

  • Senior students, with plans to graduate December 2011 or May 2012 are not eligible to apply.
  • Interested students must have one full academic year left of study (24 credit hours or more) with plans to receive a degree no earlier than May 2013 for 2012-2013 scholarships.
  • Notification of scholarship recipients will take place in April, 2012 unless noted otherwise.
  • Scholarship funds will be paid to your student account as follows:  50% paid fall 2012, 50% paid spring 2013.

Professor Louise Margaret Abernethy Scholarship in Education

  • Scholarship Type:  Merit-based
  • Donor:  Established by the estate of former Professor of Education Louise Margaret Abernethy, who loved her students and loved teaching at SUNY Cortland.
  • Eligibility Criteria:  Awarded to a junior or senior who is seeking a degree in education with a minimum 2.7 GPA, who is a resident of Cortland County and has demonstrated superior performance in student teaching placements.
  • Award:  One-time award up to $1,000.

African American Gospel Music Award
(Contact Performing Arts Department for More Information)

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Donor: Established through the generosity of many alumni, faculty and friends who support gospel music at SUNY Cortland. A multitude of donors help maintain this scholarship.
  • Eligibility Criteria:  Awarded to a student member of the Gospel Choir demonstrating strength in piano/keyboard, percussion, bass guitar/lead guitar, vocal and student directorship
  • Award: One-time award up to $500.

 Alpha Delta Junior Award
(No Application)

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Donor:  Established by the Sisters of the Alpha Delta Sorority.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Presented to an outstanding student who is in the top 10 percent of the junior class. Other considerations include leadership, professional promise, and contributions to the community.
  • Award: One-time award up to $1,000.
  • Application: None. Candidates for the Alpha Delta Awards must first be nominated by a faculty member. Nominated students interview with the Associate Dean, recommendations are forwarded to the Associate Provost for review in committee.  Consult Associate Dean for details.
  • Deadline: If seeking additional information from Associate Dean do so by November 1.
  • Additional Information: Recipient recognized at Honors Convocation.

Alpha Kappa Phi/Agonian/Tri Sig/Sigma Rho Sigma Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Donor: Established by the Sisters of the Alpha Kappa Phi Sorority.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a senior student with a minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrated financial need.  Involvement in campus life is taken into consideration.
  • Award: One-time award up to $4,000. (Funds to be awarded immediately)
  • Application:  College-wide, on-line application.  Interested students must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well.
  • Deadline:  February 1st application deadline. 
  • Additional Information: Applications will be held until Fall.  Applicants will be scheduled for interviews. Recipients selected in September.

  • Scholarship Type: Need-based.
  • Donor:  Established by the Sisters of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a sophomore, junior or senior student with a minimum 2.5 GPA and demonstrated financial need.  Patricipation in campus activities is taken into consideration.
  • Award: One-time award up to $1,000.
  • Application: College-wide, on-line application.  Interested students must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well.
  • Notification: By July.

Anderson Family Scholarship 

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Donor:  Established by Elizabeth "Beth" Anderson '79.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a sophomore, junior or senior student seeking a degree in studio art and having demonstrated financial need.  Secondary consideration given to students seeking a degree in education.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $500.00
  • Application:  Contact the Art and Art History Department.  Interested students must also complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well.

Arethusa Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Created by the sisters of the former campus sorority Arethusa, this scholarship is awarded to a full-time sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student having a 2.5 GPA or better and demonstrated financial need. Leadership and involvement in campus life is taken into consideration.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,000.
  • Application: Interested students must also complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well.

Assistant Coach Scholarship
 (Contact Athletics Department for more information)

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Interested students must be a SUNY Cortland student in one of the following categories:
    -Matriculated or non-matriculated graduate student, or
    -Matriculated or non-matriculated undergraduate student with plans to enroll in a graduate program within one-and-a-half years.
    -Current graduate students are not eligible
    -Recipient may not participate as an athlete in intercollegiate athletics
  • Award: Tuition support for up to four 3-credit courses (or equivalent) per year.
  • Application: Contact the athletics department.
  • Deadline: Applications are accepted on a continual basis.

Barr Scholarship in Science Teacher Education

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Established through a gift from Dr. Bonnie B. Barr, Professor Emerita of Education.  The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage talented college students to enter a teaching career in elementary or middle/junior high school science.  This scholarship shall be awarded to a childhood or adolescent education science education major with demonstrated financial need.
  • Award: Renewable award of up to $1,000. 
  • Continuation of Funding: Based on student remaining in science education major as well as maintaining a 2.7 GPA.

 Barry L. Batzing Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Established by J.J. Walsh '78 to honor Dr. Barry L. Batzing's long and outstanding service to SUNY Cortland, this scholarship is awarded to a contunuing student who has completed a microbiology course at SUNY Cortland with a grade of "B" (3.0) or higher, is enrolled in a major under the Health Department or Department of Biological Sciences, and has a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.  The recipient will have a strong sense of personal responsibility and a sincere interest in science.  In honoring  the work of Dr. Batzing, recipients also must demonstrate enthusiasm for their studies and have a good sense of humor
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,000.

 Harriet Bentley Memorial Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a student who is either a member of Nu Sigma Chi sorority, a relative of a former member of the sorority, or related to an alumnus of SUNY Cortland. Must be a junior at time of submitting application.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $600.

  • Donor: Established by Joan Steiner Blank '73 and her husband, Charles Blank.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded high achieving students with demonstrated financial need.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,00.

BorgWarner Morse TEC Scholarship for Community Service Volunteers

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to students in good social standing, with a 3.0 GPA who have volunteered at local community services organizations.  First preference given to family members of BorgWarner Morse TEC employees living in Central and Southern New York
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,000.

Van Akin Burd Memorial Scholarship in English

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Established through a gift by SUNY Cortland Distinguished Professor Emeritus Van Akin Burd. This scholarship is awarded to students with demonstrated financial need, with preference for students majoring in English who are juniors, seniors, or graduate students in English.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,000.

Jean K. and Dr. William P. Cadwallader Chemistry and Physics Teachers Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Need/Criteria-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Established through a gift from Mrs. Jean K. and Dr. William P. Cadwallader, this scholarship is to encourage talented college students to enter teaching careers in high school chemistry and physics, so that they may inspire a new generation of high school students to become scientists.
  • Award: Annual award up to $2,500.

James F. Casey '50 Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Eligible students must have had three semesters at Cortland and at least one semester as a residence hall staff member or Hall Council president. A minimum 3.0 GPA is required.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $800.
  • Application: Interested students must also complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well.

Wah Chip and Yuki Chin Memorial Scholarship
(Contact the James M. Clark Center for International Education)

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria:The main purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance for graduate students from the Capital Normal University to attend SUNY Cortland. The scholarship may also be used to benefit the following student types listed in priority order:
    1. Chinese undergraduate (juniors or seniors) or graduate students attending SUNY Cortland from other Mainland China universities.
    2. Graduate students attending SUNY Cortland from universities in other Asian countries.
    3. American undergraduate (junior or senior) students or graduate students enrolled at SUNY Cortland who choose to study in the following order of priority at: Capital Normal University in Beijing; other Mainland China universities; other Asian universities.
  • Award: Amount of award is determined by the International Programs Office.
  • Application: Contact the International Programs Office.

Robert E. Clark and Marilyn M. Clark '51 Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded annually to a junior or senior student planning to become a teacher in the elementary education or physical education field.  Eligible students are those majoring in childhood and/or early childhood education or physical education with demonstrated financial need and a minimum overall grade point average of 2.5.
  • Award: Annual award up to $1,000.
  • Application: Interested students must also complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well.

  • Eligibility Criteria: Available to a student with a 3.0 grade point average or better, demonstrated financial need and outstanding leadership on or off campus and involvement with extracurricular activities.

Class of '85 Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Available to a senior with a 2.7 grade point average or better and demonstrated financial need. Contributions made to the campus community are taken into consideration as well.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $750.
  • Application: Interested students must also complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well.

Community Scholarship for Student Volunteers and Interns

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all majors. Must have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours at SUNY Cortland. Minimum 2.5 GPA required when applying.  Preference given to students who are working or volunteering at the Cortland YWCA, physical education majors and females.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,000.
  • Application: Interested students must also complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well.

Cortland County Home Bureau Award

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Available to a sophomore or junior majoring in speech pathology and audiology with a 2.5 GPA or better and demonstrated financial need.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $500.
  • Application: Interested students must also complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well.

Cortland's Urban Recruitment of Educators (C.U.R.E.) Scholarships

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based but in order to receive funding recipients are required to file a FAFSA. PELL and TAP awards are figured into the equation of the award amount which funds recipients costs for tuition, books, room and board.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Admitted freshmen and continuing students majoring in areas of education who demonstrate high academic achievement and are citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Applicants who are transfer or continuing students must be admitted to a major that leads to teacher certification or, if a current freshman, be listed as "waiting" in a major that leads to teacher certification. A scholarship award for transfer or continuing students is contingent upon available space and spring semester grades reflecting an overall GPA that meets or exceeds the minimum requirement for student teaching in their major.
  • First Priority - given to individuals from groups who have been historically underrepresented or underserved in the teaching profession and who demonstrate a commitment to teach in high-need urban schools. For the purposes of C.U.R.E., these groups include, but are not limited to, African American, Hispanic, Native American or Alaskan Native individuals or individuals from an economically disadvantaged background.
  • Second Priority - given to any other individuals from groups not historically underrepresented in the teaching profession who demonstrate a commitment to teach in high-need urban schools.
  • Award: Varies. Annual award helps to defray college costs above and beyond state and federal aid the student receives.
  • Continuation of Funding: Based on student remaining comitted to C.U.R.E Program and satisfactory academic progress in a major leading to teacher certification.
  • Availability: Contingent upon annual availability of funds. Number given varies.
  • Additional Application Material: Candidates must fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) available from the Financial Aid Office.

Jay Cummings Program Fund for Field Biology

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: This scholarship was established through many gifts from SUNY Cortland's alumni, emeriti, faculty, staff and friends in recognition of Jay Cummings' many years of outstanding service as Assistant Director of SUNY Cortland's Outdoor Education Center at Raquette Lake. This program fund will be used by the professor in charge of the field biology courses taught at Raquette Lake to accomplish any of the following activities: stipends to fund program fees for students enrolled in the SUNY Cortland Field Biology courses (currently Biology 310 & 510), with demonstrated financial need with preference for students who apply with higher GPAs in Biology coursework.

  • Eligibility Criteria: Established through gifts from Dr. Peter Eisenhardt '67 for the purpose of recognizing the top two students, based on merit, participating in each of the four First Year Learning Communities: Excellence in Earth and Sky, Excellence in Our Storied Land, Excellence in Technolgy First, and Excellence in World First.  the students awarded this scholarship shall have achieved a minimum 3.3 grade point average within the learning community and made consistently positive contributions to the learning community experience, and demonstrated integrity, leadership and creativity.

Thomas L. Goodale '61 Community Service Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded each year to a student returning as a sophomore, junior, or senior in the area of recreation that has demonstrated an exemplary record of community service and high academic achievement (GPA of 3.0 or higher). Applications are reviewed in the spring, to award the scholarship for the following year for one year only.  Current scholarship recipients are eligible to reapply each year.
  • Additional Information: This scholarship is given in recognition of the department's central aspiration since its establishment in 1947. Its founder, Dr. Harlan G. Metcalf, dedicated his life to his students and university, but especially to community service.  He sought to instill in all his students and colleagues a commitment to serve others since to him there was no higher calling.  This scholarship also recognizes Dr. Thomas L. Goodale, a student of Dr. Metcalf, who has also made significant contributions to philosophy, theory and practice in the field of recreation, parks, and leisure studies.

Gregory R. Huether '10 Memorial Scholarship for Sport Management Study Abroad

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Established in memory of Gregory R. Huether '10 by his parents Ronald G. and Marguerite E. Kronman Scholarship for Non-Traditional Students was established to honor the life of Eda Joyce Kronman '70 by her sons George Kronman '76 and David Kronman '80, her daughter, Lynn (Kronman) Rozensweig, and her husband, Albert Kronman.  This scholarship is awarded annually to a non-traditional student with demonstrated financial need, with preference given to students majoring in English.

Non-Traditional Student Scholarship

  • Eligibility Criteria: : Awarded to a full or part-time student having completed at least 12 credit hours of study at SUNY Cortland and taking at least 6 credit hours in the semester the scholarship is received. Student is non-traditional in the sense that his/her college education has been interrupted. Age is not a factor. Both males and females are eligible. Preference given to deserving candidates who demonstrates: financial need, and has earned a minimum 2.5 GPA.

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a junior, senior, or graduate student majoring in English or Adolescence Education/English. Minimum grade point average of 3.0 required. 500-word essay required. Qualities of caring, community service, and helping others as demonstrated by the life of Fr. O'Heron. Intellectual promise as an English teacher or writer also taken into consideration.

  • Eligibility Criteria: Established by the SUNY Cortland Tae Kwon Do Club and family of Kristen O'Neil in her memory. This scholarship is awarded to a continuing student who has actively participated in a sport club for at least two full semesters. Debrine in memory of her mother, Doris Beale Sager, who was unable to attend Cortland, the school of her choice.  This scholarship will be awarded to a student who is pursuing a degree in physical education, has demonstrated financial need and is academically stable.

James H. and Dorothy A. Sarvay Scholarship for Community Service

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Establised by the friends and family of James H. Sarvay, who was a prominent business owner in the Cortland community and a member of the Cortland College Foundation.  The intention of this scholarship is to help support SUNY Cortland students who are from Cortland County and have demonstrated leadership in making a positive impact on the SUNY Cortland campus and/or in the Cortland Community.  This scholarship will be awarded to a junior, senior or graduate student.

Sigma Delta Phi Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: This scholarship, created by the former sisters of the Sigma Delta Phi Sorority, requires that candidates must have completed at least two full semester at SUNY Cortland at the time of application, have at least one full year of study remaining before graduation and have a 2.5 or better GPA. Applicants must also demonstrate active participation in campus life, social involvement with other students, fulfillment of personal goals, improvement of campus life and educational opportunities.

Donald Spampinato '84 Scholarship for Student Leadership and Physical Education

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Established by Fred Lipscomb '83 (Captain of Track and Field and a Resident Advisor for Housing and Residence Life) and Scott Fallon '86 (Men's Basketball team member 1982-1983 and Residence Assistant 1984-1985) in honor of their great experiences at SUNY Cortland as Physical Education majors and Residence Advisors and in memory of their esteemed colleague, Donald Spampinato '84, who passed away in the World Trade Center on 9/11. This scholarship shall be awarded annually to a sophomore, junior or senior who is a Resident Advisor who has had a positive impact on the SUNY Cortland campus.  First preference give to a Physical Education Major.

Taylor, on the occasion of his retirement from SUNY Cortland, to reinforce the value of making a difference through volunteering and to create a lasting legacy that honors his contributions to SUNY Cortland. Ethel Mahan Theisen '55 Scholarship for Childhood Education

  • Eligibility Criteria: This scholarship, established by Gerald P. Theisen '53 in memory of his wife Ethel, a dedicated teacher throughout her life, was created to help support future elementary school teachers.  Ethel Mahan Theisen '55 was an outstanding and talented elementary education teacher whose devotion to her students remained strong throughout the years.  This scholarship shall be awarded to a continuing childhood education major with demonstrated financial need and a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Marion C. Thompson Memorial Scholarship

  • Scholarship Type: Merit/Need-based.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Available to junior, senior or graduate students who are English or Professional Writing majors having demonstrated academic success and financial need.
  • Award: One-time award of up to $1,500.

  • Eligibility Criteria: Established by Paul and Amy Volk to honor the excellent education Paul received at SUNY Cortland and in gratitude for the financial support he received through the GI Bill. Paul and Amy strongly believe that education opens doors to opportunities beyond imagination. It is their desire that this scholarship recognize enthusiastic students majoring in Physical Education who are studying to become teachers. Awarded to a continuing SUNY Cortland student who is majoring in physical education, has a 2.7+ GPA and demonstrated financial need.

Zipp, Distinguished Teaching Professor of Chemistry, Emeritus.  This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student majoring in Chemistry or Adolescent Education Chemsitry at SUNY Cortland.  To be considered, students must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average, completed General Chemistry I at SUNY Cortland and must be enrolled in General Chemistry II.  Recipient will be a sophomore, junior or transfer student who has satisfied these requirements.  Must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative average,
