We Conquered It Together

In the days leading up to our first-ever 24-hour giving challenge, plenty of buzz circulated around the number 227. It was meant to serve as a constant reminder of the Feb. 27 challenge date as well as the goal for the number of challenge day donors.

In the end, the number of donors more than tripled the initial goal. But the challenge meant more than its impressive results. In the end, the 2/27 Challenge highlighted our generous SUNY Cortland supporters — alumni, students, employees and friends — pulling together and rallying around an institution they care deeply about.

For that, we cannot thank you enough.

At final tally, 871 people gave $72,857 throughout the day. Add to that three generous challenge gifts worth $10,000 each — two from Louise M. Conley and one from Anthony Moon ’86 — and the result was $102,857 to support every corner of campus life, from the research lab to the playing field to every place in between.

Throughout the day, you surpassed what we considered to be ambitious goals. The initial target was 227 people. It doubled to 454 around noon. Finally, in the early evening, the goal grew to 600 donors, which was achieved with plenty of time to spare. Still, as impressive as the final dollar figure was, our goal was more about building momentum behind a collective effort. That goal was achieved and then some.

As gifts trickled in online, over the phone and in person, donors often shared the reason behind their giving. Favorite professors, memorable coaches and former classmates were common mentions, emphasizing the importance of people on SUNY Cortland’s campus. As much as the 2/27 Challenge seemed driven by goals and numbers and a competitive SUNY Cortland spirit, the effort ultimately succeeded because of the loyal people who stood behind it.

Today and every day, we couldn’t be more thankful to call them our own.

Our deepest thanks again to all who supported the challenge. Like SUNY Cortland on Facebook, follow @SUNY_Cortland on Twitter and use #CortlandChallenge as we re-live the excitement in coming days.
