Everyone needs a guardian angel. Ask Devine Bailey. His mother was his inspiration and his foundation. She kept him safe while he grew up on Harlem’s mean streets, until he moved to Troy, N.Y., where he excelled in high school and mentored youth at the local YMCA. He earned an associate’s degree and enrolled at Cortland.
But when cancer suddenly ended his mother’s life, Devine struggled. His grades slipped. All of his financial options vanished. He desperately needed a lifeline.
An anonymous donor to SUNY Cortland’s Guardian Angelfish Scholarship Program provided that helping hand. Securing the necessary funds to continue, Devine excelled academically. He rekindled his coaching skills and guided the women’s club basketball team. Best of all, Devine was on track again to earn his bachelor’s degree.
