Downtown Gallery Honors Bill Griffen, a Champion of Peace

A 51-year career. More than 11,200 students taught. One influential College professor exemplifying political awareness and activism. A portrait of Bill Griffen ’50 hangs with the “Americans Who Tell the Truth” exhibition at Dowd Gallery. He’ll be recognized posthumously Thursday, March 7, with a special event open to the public.

Sgro Named Executive Director of Alumni Affairs

Michael Sgro, the former director of alumni and parent relations at SUNY Oswego, has been picked to lead the College’s Alumni Affairs Office as its executive director. Over a 15-year career, the higher education veteran has earned a stellar reputation for his work with student and alumni programming, career networking and social media.

Newtown Hero Honored by President Obama

President Barack Obama in February posthumously awarded Mary Joy Greene Sherlach '78 and the other five adults killed during last year's Newtown school shooting with the President's Citizens Medal for heroism. As part of its coverage, CBS Evening News put together an extended piece on Sherlach, which included an interview with her husband, William Sherlach '80. The College remains deeply saddened by her loss.

Power Outage Can’t Darken Trip for Super Bowl Raffle Winner

The Mercedes-Benz Superdome power outage that interrupted Super Bowl XLVII for more than a half-hour didn’t put a damper on an inimitable trip for Sean Murray ’80 and his wife. If anything, it allowed the winner of the College’s Super Bowl Raffle a few more minutes to soak in the experience of a lifetime.

Student’s Hockey Brainchild Finds Cortland Connection
|
 |
Many positives came from sophomore Nicholas Penberthy’s backyard hockey tournament — $11,000 raised for a Buffalo inner-city charity, dozens of businesses banded together to provide much-needed resources free of charge, and several hundred people, children to adults, energized on the ice. This year, however, the event had even more of a Cortland feel when Amanda Smock Nolan '02 became its first female participant.

Memorial Service Planned for Frank Burdick

Generations of SUNY Cortland graduates who took a history class from Frank Burdick between 1966 until the present recall him with fondness. Burdick died on Jan. 19. The College community and his family will hold a memorial service on Sunday, March 24, in Cortland.
