Red Dragon-Themed Cake Sweetens Couple’s Nuptials

Kate Yaun Giametta ’07 and John Giametta, Jr. ’08 expected to see a traditional bride and groom replica on top of their wedding cake. But when they went to cut it, they saw an unforgettable cake display that brought them back to their softball and baseball playing days at SUNY Cortland.

Angela Priore Thurlow ’82 oversaw transformative growth for SUNY Cortland’s Child Care Center. The College recognized the associate director emerita of admissions for her generosity and for a career that spanned more than half a century on Sept. 2, when it dedicated the resource room of the Child Care Center in Thurlow’s name.

Homecoming 2011 Invites Red Dragons from Near and Far

Don’t pass up a weekend of football and friends from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2. The Cortland Alumni Chapter will host a party before the College’s football squad takes on Morrisville in a rare night game on Oct. 1.

Pre-registered alumni will be invited to watch part of the game with President Erik J. Bitterbaum in the Stephen J. Hunt ’72 VIP Lounge, while other Homecoming highlights include a children’s lunch with Blaze the mascot and beer tasting for adults at the Great Cortland Pumpkinfest!

A memorial basketball tournament to honor the late Calvin Louise-Juste ’09 and a keynote speech from Russell Ferguson ’81, the director of diversity management for New York state’s Office for People with Developmental Disabilities, highlight this year’s Multicultural Reunion, which takes place Sept. 25-26. Project Puts History Alumni on the Map

A project that began two years ago attempts to track down SUNY Cortland’s history and social studies alumni. Three oversized maps on the second floor of Old Main plot the locations of some graduates, but the “Social Studies and History Alumni at Work” project still seeks more names.

For plenty of young alumni, relationships with their eventual spouses blossomed on the SUNY Cortland campus. Many, including a graduate featured in the spring edition of Columns, have selected the Lynne Parks ’68 Alumni House as the perfect wedding venue.

Do you know a SUNY Cortland graduate who can offer worthwhile career advice? The 2011-12 Alumni Speaker Series will feature speakers who can answer job-related questions from current students. The following panels will be offered: business and economics; communication studies, media and marketing; health; sport management; human services and helping professions; and recreation and leisure studies.
