College to Honor Three Distinguished Alumni

Judith Rink ’65

The SUNY Cortland Alumni Association will present its highest honor, the Distinguished Alumni Award, to graduates during the Alumni Reunion Weekend luncheon in Corey Union on Saturday, July 17. The honorees are: Judith Rink ’65, a professor of physical education at the University of South Carolina who has been nationally and internationally recognized in her field; and the late Kathleen O’Callaghan Maul ’72, who was nationally recognized for her leadership as the executive director for United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Suffolk (UCPGSC). The Alumni Association will present its Distinguished Young Alumna Award to Amber Larkin Rice ’03, a North Carolina schoolteacher who joined 19 outstanding educators on the 2007 national All-USA Teacher Team.

South Buffalo Tradition

Two former SUNY Cortland All-American football players, Rich Keefer ’88 and Pat Lalley ’98, are earning national recognition once again, this time as restaurant owners. Keefer launched one of the nation’s steak houses in the heart of downtown Chicago. Lalley operates The Blackthorn, a treasured icon in the South Buffalo Irish neighborhood featured on The Food Network. They share their stories, both of which speak to lessons learned at Cortland, the powerful influence of an older brother, and the commitment to do things the right way.
