2. Culminating Activity Policy

The Committee continued its discussion on a Culminating Activity Policy and reviewed a fourth draft of a proposed policy. A fifth draft will be developed for E-mail review by the Committee and shared at the upcoming meeting of graduate coordinators (November 30, 2006). As part of the discussion the following points were raised:

 a. Should a policy be developed that would require all culminating experiences to be credit generating? Some on the Committee assumed that agreement had already been reached among members that such a policy would be required of all departments, while others believed agreement had not been reached and that adoption should be up to individual departments. It was decided to explore the issue further with the graduate coordinators.

 b. Should adoption of the Culminating Activity Continuous Enrollment Policy be required of all departments or should adoption be optional and at the discretion of departments? If such a policy were adopted, departments would have to list a culminating activity completion course as part of their course offerings and the 697 course number will be reserved for such courses across all departments. It was decided to explore the issue further with the graduate coordinators.

 c. It was reaffirmed that S, U grading would apply to the culminating activity completion course (XXX 697), but departments would continue to have the option to use any other type of grading for their culminating activity experience (thesis, project, comprehensive examination)
